[Solo Studios x Creallo] Sculpted by the Sea: How Solo Studios Brought the Cowrie Shell Bag to Life with SLA 3D Printing

A Brand Born from the Atlantic

Solo Studios is a luxury accessories brand rooted in African heritage — specifically the rich visual culture of Senegal. Founded by Nogaye Diop, the brand makes handcrafted bags and accessories that sit at the intersection of artisan tradition and contemporary design. Worn by artists and cultural figures including Selena Gomez, Kelly Rowland, and Lupita Nyong’o, Solo Studios has established itself as a name that fashion’s most discerning tastemakers trust. The brand also directs a portion of its revenue toward supporting local Senegalese artisans — embedding community impact directly into its business model.

The brand's pieces are not simply bags — they are objects. Each one is conceived as a sculptural work with cultural meaning, a philosophy that extends to the materials and processes used to make them.

Solo Studios brought its sea-inspired Cowrie Shell Bag to life with SLA 3D printing.

The Idea: A Shell from the Sea

The ‘An Ode to the Sea’ collection draws directly from Senegalese coastal imagery and folklore. At its center is the cowrie shell — a symbol that has carried spiritual and economic weight across West African cultures for centuries. Solo Studios' interpretation reimagines the shell as a handbag: a smooth, closed organic form available in a striking range of colorways — from chrome silver and lilac to cherry red, blue, green, and beige. Some finishes are matte; others are high-gloss or mirror-plated, giving each piece a distinctly different character despite sharing the same iconic silhouette.

Each piece reads as a collectible as much as a functional accessory. The design intent was clear — but the path to realizing that form in a real, holdable, wearable object required a manufacturing process that could match the ambition of the concept.

The shell shape, the colour, the finish — everything had to be perfect. There was no room for compromise on the surface.

It had to feel like you were holding something that came out of the ocean.

The Challenge

The cowrie shell silhouette — smooth, closed, and built around a double-curve geometry — is not a form that conventional manufacturing handles well. Injection molding would require complex multi-part tooling, making it a poor fit for a luxury brand whose clientele is intentionally select — high-profile customers who value exclusivity over volume. Traditional handcraft could approximate the form, but not the surface consistency and precision the design demanded.

The shell bag demanded not just precise geometry, but a level of post-processing sophistication — chrome plating, multi-layered transparent gradients, flawless surface finishes — that proved difficult to source reliably. Finding a single partner who could handle all of it, at the right quality and pace, became the central challenge.

After experiencing several unsuccessful attempts with other suppliers, the search expanded globally. Solo Studios initially researched options in both Korea and Japan, looking for a region with a reputation for technical rigour and finishing quality. South Korea emerged as the ideal fit, offering significant advantages in both technical capability and pricing competitiveness. To find a reliable partner, the Solo Studios team decided to fly out to South Korea to see things firsthand. Visiting Creallo’s facility and reviewing samples hands-on confirmed that the team was highly professional, exceptionally fast, and delivered excellent quality that no other manufacturer could match on the combination of quality assurance, finishing capability, and competitiveness.

And Creallo's Solution

  • From the very first meeting, Creallo moved fast. Two prototypes and a color test were ready within three days — a timeline that would have taken a month or more had injection molding and tooling been involved.
  • Chrome plating and transparent gradient finishes — the defining features of the collection’s most striking pieces — were executed consistently and to a standard that other manufacturers had struggled to match.
  • The Creallo team reviewed each order with a level of scrutiny that matched Solo Studios’ own standards, flagging potential issues before they reached the finishing stage.
  • Cost and lead time both came down by approximately 40% compared to other suppliers in Europe or US — without any compromise on quality.
  • High flexibility for a growing luxury brand, enabling on-demand, made-to-order production of one or two pieces without strict minimum order quantities (MOQs).

Working with Creallo has meant roughly a 40% reduction in both cost and lead time,

without any compromise on quality.

The Process: SLA Printing and the Art of the Finish

The shell bag body is produced using SLA (Stereolithography) 3D printing. Its ability to capture complex organic geometry with high dimensional accuracy made it the natural choice for the shell's flowing silhouette.

Raw SLA print straight from the build platform — before finishing begins

Each bag starts as a clear or white resin print. From there, the craft takes over.

Surface preparation and finishing work transform the print into something that feels considered and complete — each colorway calling for its own post-processing approach. Some pieces receive a matte or gloss coat; others go further. For select finishes, chrome painting is applied to achieve the mirror-like surface that makes the bag look as though it emerged from the ocean floor rather than a print bed. It is a technically demanding step: the heat involved in the plating process risks warping the resin in ways that are subtle but unacceptable. Other manufacturers had tried and fallen short. Creallo's team got it right

From deep jewel tones to mirror chrome — the finishing stage is where each piece finds its character.

Seen in the Wild

The Cowrie Shell Bag has made its way into some of contemporary culture's most compelling spaces. Rei Ami, known for her role in K-pop Demon Hunters, has been photographed carrying the bag off-screen. Kate Hudson was also spotted with it at a public event.

These aren't coincidences. They're a reflection of what the bag is: an object with enough presence to hold its own anywhere — on a red carpet, at an event, or on the street.

The Work Continues

For Solo Studios, Creallo has become a reliable manufacturing partner for a product that demands both technical precision and a craftsman's sensibility. The made-to-order model — producing one or two units at a time — suits the brand's positioning as a luxury, limited-availability label. Quality is consistent. Communication is smooth. The work continues.

Working with Creallo has genuinely been one of the easiest and most seamless manufacturing experiences we’ve had — incredibly skilled, highly responsive, and capable of bringing virtually anything to life. The flexibility to order one or two pieces without strict minimums has been extremely valuable for a growing brand like ours. Honestly, a 10 out of 10 experience.
