Vacuum Casting
Vacuum casting mixes a liquid resin with a curing agent and injects it into a silicone mold,
then cures it under vacuum to form the part.
First, a master model — the original of the part being reproduced — is made. Liquid silicone is poured around the master model and left to cure; once the master model is removed, the silicone mold is complete.
The finished mold halves are clamped together and material is injected into the cavity,
then cured and released from the mold — repeating this cycle produces each vacuum-cast replica.
Also known as: urethane casting, silicone molding, or RTV molding
Advantages
- Fast turnaround for low-volume replica parts using a single silicone mold
- Multi-material, single-piece parts possible via dual-shot casting
- Cost-effective way to test injection-molded designs
Disadvantages
- Material properties can differ from the original resin due to the composite materials used
- Design factors such as undercuts and parting lines need review
