3D Builder 

3D Builder is a free 3D design software developed by Microsoft. It allows users to create and edit 3D models easily, even without experience in CAD. You can combine basic shapes or import existing 3D files in various formats such as STL, OBJ, and 3MF. It also features 2D-to-3D conversion from images. 

As a user-friendly tool for both beginners and professionals, 3D Builder supports everything from initial concept design to final 3D printing. It can be installed quickly and used with most 3D printers, making it a great entry-level tool for model repair and printing preparation. 

Meshmixer 

Meshmixer, provided by Autodesk, is a powerful and free mesh editing tool. It can automatically detect and repair a wide range of issues such as holes, disconnected surfaces, and intersecting faces. 

Although Meshmixer is no longer actively updated or supported, it is still available for free and remains a valuable resource for repairing complex 3D models. Many of its core features are now being integrated into Autodesk Fusion 360. 

Netfabb 

Netfabb is a professional-grade mesh analysis and repair tool, also from Autodesk. It detects and fixes mesh issues including holes, non-manifold geometry, duplicate triangles, and more. It performs reliably even with large or highly complex models and offers advanced features such as batch processing and macro scripting. 

Ideal for industrial use and complex print preparations, Netfabb is a paid tool with a free trial available for evaluation. 


How to Use 3D Builder for Automatic Mesh Repair 

Let’s take a closer look at how to repair 3D models using the "Model Repair" function in 3D Builder—one of the most commonly used tools.

1. Check for Errors 

When you open a 3D model in 3D Builder, the software automatically scans for mesh issues. 

Errors such as loose components, gaps, or misaligned surfaces are highlighted. 

A warning message or red markers will indicate areas requiring repair.

Once repaired, error indicators (such as red outlines) will disappear.

Once the repair is complete, the red warning disappears.
